Well my 200Tdi 90 transfer box / gearbox has finally let go.

Splines worn and horible clunky metally sounds....

So, reading through history on the groups the general opinion is to
drop the boxes out and replace with recon units rather than repair.

Question then is who to get one from? Ive heard very good things
about Ashcrofts (one or too bad also) but not much about anybody else.

I know LEGS in Oswestry supply / fit them also but surly their must be
more than 2 *Good* suppliers / "reconners" in the UK?? I am aware of
many people who will strip & repair them but these garages that I know
tend to buy in recon units from elswehere - From a £££'s point of view
I may as well cut out the middle man if I can!!

Also, has anyone any experience in raising the high box gearing to
that of the new Disco's? Ashcrofts do this and it does sound
appealing for the motorway driving whilst at the same time leaving the
low box as per original.

Any thoughts welcomed.

When I had the Disco done nobody came close to Ashcrofts on price, and
with a good reputation to boot. The box they did for me was 100%
reliable and I have no cause for complaint, although I was never sure
that the shift to 2nd was as good as it ought to be (but no worse than
the box that came out).

All in, including fitting and courtesy car, was £900 including a new
clutch at the same time.

You could buy a box and have someone locally fit it, but then you have
two people to complain to if it doesn't work right and they will both
blame each other!

Tim,
Out of interest was it £900 including the dreaded VAT?? Prices
straight of the Ashcroft website suggest around £1000 including VAT
for both boxes & clutch fitted.

Sounds like there's room to haggle / negotiate!

I think it was £900 odd, including VAT. That was almost three years
ago though, so £1000 seems reasonable. At the time nobody came close
on price, especially as I had a client visit not too far from their
place. The courtesy car meant I could drop it off at 8am and collect
on the way home, otherwise it would have been a big hassle not to have
the car.

When I had the Disco done nobody came close to Ashcrofts on price, and
Ashcrofts were featured on the Discovery H&L show a 4x4 is born last night
and they appear to know their stuff. They had Mr Ashcroft himself (David?)
on and they showed you the process that a gearbox goes through when it gets
rebuilt. It looked quite thorough with the casings being cleaned and checked
and any new innards needed being fitted.

It's where I'd go if I needed a new 'box, partly 'cos they seem quite good
but mainly cos I only live 15 miles from them. :-)

I have let Ashcroft change the gear-, and transferbox of mine '94 Disco last
Februari.
Even with the trip included (from Holland) is was worth the effort!!
Great services, and fixed prices (overhere in Holland almost impossible)
