my car has a brake disc that has been grooved by a pad wearing down
and it going metal to metal.
It has 3 circular grooves running round it in the outer 1/4 of the
disc on one side. it is still nice and shiney apart from this (and
even in the grooves since the pads seem to wear to match it)

will this be an MOT failure or is it okay?

If it were a normal disc i would happily replace it (i have the new
ones in the house!), but it doesnt just unscrew and come off - it
appears that the wheel bearings are inside the hub of the brake disc
making it more complicated as you have to knock them out and refit
them afterwards.

MOT Testers Manual, section 3-5.1

Item:
The condition and security of brake drums and discs

Resons for failure:
A brake disc or drum insecure, cracked or excessively scored, pitted
or worn

So it all depends on how bad it is, and the Testers definition of
"excessively scored"

Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. You should be able to fit new
discs within the free re-test period. Even on a Range Rover.
